What we collect, and how to be left out

Last updated October 1, 2026

FragranceSwap is an independent, unofficial site. It is not affiliated with Reddit or with the moderators of r/fragranceswap. It organizes public r/fragranceswap posts so bottles are easier to find and compare; every deal still happens on Reddit.

Public Reddit posts

Through Reddit’s API, we read public r/fragranceswap posts and store, for each one:

  • its title, text, flair, link, and posting time;
  • the poster’s Reddit username;
  • the poster’s own comments on it (to learn when a bottle sells);
  • the listing details we work out from it: fragrance, size, fill, price, and whether it sold.

Listing details are extracted automatically: the post’s text is sent to an AI language model through OpenRouter, which returns the details. Only the post’s public text is sent, never anything about visitors.

Removed and deleted posts

When a post is removed or deleted on Reddit, or its author deletes their account, we delete what we stored: the title, text, username, and comments, and take the listing off the site. Active listings are checked every few minutes; every stored post is re-checked continuously.

Leaving FragranceSwap out

If you post on r/fragranceswap and don’t want your posts here, sign in with Reddit and use Hide my posts from FragranceSwap on your account page, or send a Reddit message to u/SlinkToTheDink. We delete your posts’ text, your username, and their prices, and never collect your posts again.

If you sign in

Signing in with Reddit gives us your Reddit account ID and username, nothing else (the “identity” permission). We never post, vote, or message on your behalf. With an account we store your watched fragrances and alert settings, alerts we sent you, saved listings, and any parsing reports you file. A cookie keeps you signed in for 30 days. You can delete your account and all of this at any time from your account page.

Photo scans

If you scan a photo in the post builder, it is shrunk and re-encoded in your browser (which removes its metadata, including location), then sent to OpenRouter and the model provider it routes to, only to read the labels. We don't store the photo. We count how many scans your account has used.

Email alerts

Email is optional. If you add an address, we send it one confirmation link and nothing else until you use it. A confirmed address is used only for alerts about fragrances you watch: never for marketing, and never shared. Every alert email has a one-click unsubscribe link, and you can pause or remove the address on your account page at any time; removing it deletes it. Emails are sent through Resend, which handles the address and the message on our behalf.

Usage counts

To see which features are used, we count a few actions: searches and filters, opening a listing, saving one, and following a link to Reddit. They are tied to a random ID in a cookie that expires after a day, and that ID is stored only in hashed form. We don’t store IP addresses, browser fingerprints, or your Reddit identity with these counts, and there are no third-party trackers or ads. Search text is kept only in normalized form, and never when it looks like a link or an email address.

Abuse limits

To stop automated abuse, we count requests that write or cost money (sign-ins, reports, saves, watches). For signed-in actions the count is tied to your account; for sign-ins and usage counts it is tied to a salted, one-way hash of your network address, never the address itself. These counts are deleted within two days.

Retail prices

Retail prices come from public retailer listings, looked up by fragrance name through a web data provider (Bright Data). No personal data is involved.

Who else handles data

We don’t sell or share personal data. The services that run the site process it on our behalf: our hosting and database providers, Reddit (sign-in and post data), OpenRouter and the model provider it routes to (public post text, and photos you choose to scan), Bright Data (fragrance names only), and Resend (your email address and alert emails, if you add one).
